Privacy Policy

Ankhdase is used by children, so the honest version of this document is short: we collect what is needed to teach and to show a teacher how a child is doing, and nothing else. No advertising, no trackers, no sale of data, ever.

The short version

  • No advertising is shown to students. There is no ad network on this site.
  • No third-party analytics or tracking scripts. Nothing on the page reports to an analytics service, a social network, or any data broker.
  • No third-party cookies. One first-party cookie keeps you signed in. That is all.
  • We never sell, rent or share personal information with anyone for their own purposes.
  • No student-to-student messaging. There is no chat, no comments, and no profile a stranger can reach.
  • A student account does not require an email address.

Who we are

Ankhdase is an independently operated service.

Questions about this policy go to privacy@ankhdase.com.

What we collect

Only three kinds of thing, all of it tied to a single account.

Account details

  • A username and a display name, both chosen by the student or their teacher.
  • A password, stored only as a scrypt hash. We cannot read it, and neither can a teacher.
  • An account type (student, teacher or parent), a grade band, and a chosen avatar.
  • An email address only where one is genuinely needed. Teacher and parent accounts require one so the account can be recovered. Student accounts do not — a teacher can create a whole roster with no email addresses at all.

Learning records

  • Which activity was played, when, for how long, the score, and how many answers were right and wrong.
  • A per-skill mastery estimate, which is what decides the next question's difficulty.
  • Typing-course progress, including words per minute and per-key accuracy.
  • Streaks, XP, badges, and assignment progress.
  • Ankhs earned and spent. Ankhs are points inside the site; they have no cash value and cannot be bought.

Class membership

  • Which classes a student belongs to, and which teachers hold a seat on those classes.
  • A parent or guardian link, where a teacher or parent has created one.

What we deliberately do not collect

  • No advertising identifiers and no ad profiles.
  • No location. The site never asks for it and the code never reads it.
  • No camera or microphone. No activity on Ankhdase uses either.
  • No contacts, files, or anything else from the device.
  • No IP addresses in the application database. Play records are not tied to a network address.
  • No behavioral profile. Nothing about a child is used for anything except choosing their next question and drawing their teacher's progress report.

Cookies and local storage

Ankhdase sets one cookie, named ank. It holds a signed account reference, nothing more — no name, no email, no behavior. It is HttpOnly so page scripts cannot read it, restricted to this site with SameSite=Lax, and it expires after 90 days or when you sign out.

Your browser also keeps some things locally, on your own device, which never reach us: your theme and sound preferences, and an offline copy of the activities so they still work without a connection.

There are no third-party cookies, no tracking pixels, and no cross-site identifiers.

Server logs

Like any web server, ours records each request — the IP address, the time, the page requested, and the browser's user-agent string. These logs exist to keep the service running and to spot abuse. They are automatically deleted after 14 days, they are never joined to a student's learning records, and they are never used to build a profile.

Who can see a student's data

WhoCan see
The studentTheir own progress, badges, Ankhs and assignments.
Their teacherProgress and mastery for students in their own class only, and the class leaderboard.
A co-teacherThe same as the teacher, but only for a class they were explicitly invited to.
A parent or guardianTheir own linked child's progress, and nothing about any other child.
Other studentsA classmate's display name and XP on the class leaderboard. Nothing else — no email, no scores, no answers.
Anyone elseNothing.

A teacher can only reset the password of a student in their own class, and only for a student account — never for another adult.

Children under 13 (COPPA)

Where a school or teacher creates student accounts, the school is acting as the parents' agent to consent on their behalf, which is the arrangement COPPA sets out for classroom services. We collect from those accounts only what the educational activity itself needs.

Where a parent creates a child's account directly, that parent is providing consent themselves.

A parent may ask to see everything held about their child, to correct it, or to have it deleted, and may refuse any further collection. Write to privacy@ankhdase.com. We will action it. We will never require a child to disclose more than is reasonably necessary in order to take part.

Schools and student records (FERPA)

When a school uses Ankhdase, the learning records we hold are education records belonging to the school. We hold them as a school official under the school's direction: we use them only to provide the service, we do not use them for any purpose of our own, and we return or delete them on the school's instruction.

Districts that require a signed data privacy agreement should write to privacy@ankhdase.com. We will sign a standard district or state DPA.

How long we keep it, and how to have it deleted

  • Account and learning records are kept while the account exists.
  • A teacher removing a student from a class removes the class link immediately.
  • Server logs are deleted after 14 days.
  • On request from a parent, teacher, or school, we delete an account and its learning records. Ask at privacy@ankhdase.com.

Where the data lives

On a server we operate in the United States. Access is limited to the people who run the service, and the site is served over HTTPS only.

We use no third-party processors for student data. The only external request a page makes is for a web font.

Advertising

Ankhdase does not show advertising. No ad network is loaded, no ad identifiers are set, and no student data is shared with any advertiser or data broker. If this ever changes we will update this page and notify schools before it takes effect — and we will never permit behaviorally targeted advertising to students.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that materially affects what we collect or who can see it, we will update the date below and notify account holders.
